Automated Number Identification.
American National Standards Institute. A body that maintains and disseminates common standards in the United States. ANSI standards are applicable to a wide range of markets and products—well beyond the scope of Aeris or cellular.

Code Division Multiple Access. Digital cellular phone service method that separates multiple transmissions over a finite frequency allocation using Spread Spectrum techniques (concept invented and patented by Hedy Lamar).
The location of the site used to house the BS and associated equipment.
Common Language Location Identifier Code. A term used to identify locations and nodes on SS7 networks by name. Pronounced “silly code”.
Calling Number Identity Presentation. Delivery and display of calling party number. Commonly known as “Caller ID”.
The μcontroller, or μprocessor, in the Device, external (but “connected”) to the Module, which executes the firmware of the Application.
The Aeris Customer once their Device and the Host have passed Qualification and the Device is in commercial status. Thus, Customer is a subset of the term Developer. See also Developer.

The data transmitted from the Device and sent to the Host. Data Delivery also refers to the interface protocol for the connection from the Host to Aeris that receives this data. See also Page Delivery.
Digital Control Channel. A channel used to transmit control information in a digital cellular system. See also ACCH.
Destination Point Code. The address of a node on a signaling network that is the recipient of an SS7 message. The DPC and OPC are contained within the message. See also OPC.

Digital Signal Processor.
The ability of a cellular device to operate in more than one cellular band of frequencies. For example, an ANSI‐2000 CDMA cellular device that can operate in both the North American 800Mhz and 1900Mhz cellular frequency bands. See also Dual‐Mode.
The ability of a cellular device to utilize two cellular technologies—generally one digital cellular technology that is compatible, and combined, with analog AMPS. For example, a device that can operate in ANSI‐2000 CDMA as well as EIA‐553 AMPS in a single cellular device. See also Dual‐Band.
Electronic Industries Alliance. A Washington‐based alliance of industry associations (for example, the TIA).
Equipment Identity Register.
Electronic Serial Number. The unique hardware number associated with a cellular device, which is transmitted to the system when the device communicates with the cellular system. See also MEID.
European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Based in Sophia Antipolis (France), ETSI is an independent, non‐profit organization, officially responsible for standardization of Information and Communication Technologies within Europe.
Foreign Agent. The specific network infrastructure at the Visited Carrier that controls and connects the ANSI‐2000 Packet‐Radio sessions. See also HA.
Forward Data Packet. This is an Aeris packet type and method used to deliver data digits, in the forward direction, to a Device.
Remote Feature Control Request. The ANSI‐41 message format used to transport MicroBurst data from the MSC to the Aeris data systems.
Fixed Aeris Application
An Application installed in a physical location (e.g., mounted on a wall in a building) and that is not expected to physically move (i.e., change location) while providing the Application functionality, even though it uses a “mobile” cellular radio.

Forward Control Channel. The radio channel used for communication of control and page messages from a BS to a cellular device.
Forward Voice Channel. The radio channel used for communication of voice or user data from the BS to a cellular device.
Integrated Circuit Card IDentifier. The unique identifier for a SIM.
International Forum on ANSI‐41 Standards Technologies. IFAST is an open, international forum whose mission is to facilitate the identification and resolution of technical issues to enable the international interoperability of systems using the ANSI family of standards resulting in the steady migration toward seamless service. IFAST also allocates non‐dialable numbers in the MIN/MSID ranges 0XX‐XXX‐XXXX, 1XX‐XXX‐XXXX, NXX‐0XX‐XXXX, and NXX‐1XX‐XXXX (where N ranges from 2‐9, inclusive, and X ranges from 0‐9, inclusive). IFAST also makes International SID assignments. See www.ifast.org.
International Mobile Equipment Identifier (or Identity.) A unique serial number associated with an ME—the cellular device.
International Mobile Subscriber Identifier (or Identity.) A unique identification number (generally associated with a SIM) used by a subscriber. Defined in IS‐95 CDMA, ANSI‐2000 CDMA and IS‐136 TDMA, it is currently used primarily in GSM cellular networks.
Interim Standard 41. The signaling protocol (typically used over SS7 networks) for North American and PCS cellular systems—although versions are deployed in other countries that are using ANSI cellular technologies. The released versions include IS‐41, IS‐41A, IS‐41B and IS‐41C. The EIA has accepted this protocol standard and issued EIA‐41D and EIA‐41E (also known as ANSI‐41); however, EIA‐41E is not yet a currently deployed standard in most cellular networks. IS‐41F is in review.
Interim Standard 95. The EIA/TIA standard that governs the operation of CDMA cellular service. Versions include IS‐95A and IS‐95B. See also CDMA.
Interim Standard 136. The EIA/TIA standard that governs the operation of North American TDMA cellular service—versions include IS‐136A. See also TDMA.
Media Access Control Address. A unique value associated with a network adapter.

Mobile Directory Number. The directory listing telephone number that is dialed (generally using POTS) to reach a mobile unit. The MDN is usually associated with an MSID in a cellular telephone.
Mobile Equipment. The cellular device. Typically used in GSM cellular to describe the cellular handset containing the radio section, into which a SIM can be inserted for setting actual service.
Mobile Equipment Identifier. A new Device Identifier that has replaced the ESN in new ANSI‐2000 handsets and Devices. See also ESN.
Mobile Identification Number. The unique account number associated with a Device. It is broadcast by the Device when accessing the cellular system. The term MIN has been replaced by MSID. See also MSID. Mobile Aeris Application

Monthly Recurring Charge. Typically the montly service plan charge on a Customer invoice that is independent of data charges.
Metropolitan Service Area. The 306 United States urban areas (markets) designated by the FCC for licenses to operate the A Band and B Band cellular services. MSA’s comprise about 76% of the US population and about 22% of the land area.
Mobile Switching Center. Equipment that provides services and communicates between external networks and cellular switches. Also the location of the equipment.
Mobile Switching Center Identification. The combination of the SID and SWNO.
Mobile Station Identifier. The new term for MIN that is now used for ANSI‐2000 handsets and Devices—this term was introduced as a result of Local Number Portability implementation, where the MIN and MDN matching was eliminated in North American cellular deployments. See also MIN.
Mobile Station ISDN in GSM cellular networks. In North American GSM cedlular, the MSISDN is the same as the MDN. See also MDN.
Mobile‐Terminated SMS. See also MO‐SMS and SMS.
Mobile Telephone Switching Office. Older acronym for an MSC.
Network Access Identifier. The NAI is used to address a user within a specific Internet domain. The format of an NAI is similar to that of an e‐mail address—it is comprised of a user portion that identifies the individual node and a realm portion that identifies an administration domain within the Internet. The two portions are separated by a “@” sign. For example, “user@realm” is an NAI.
North American Numbering Plan. An assignment of numbers that determines the assignment of area codes (commonly called the NPA) and exchanges (commonly called the Office Code or NXX).
The North American Numbering Plan Administrator.
Numbering Plan Area. A set of three digits ranging from 200 to 999 designating the area prefix for a telephone number in the NANP.
Exchange/Office Code. A set of three digits ranging from 000 to 999 designating the local prefix for a telecommunications central office within an NPA in the NANP.
Network Operation Center. The monitoring center maintained by Aeris to provide support for their Customers, to monitor the state of the network and take corrective action for any problems.
The ability of a cellular device to operate in multiple world‐wide cellular band of frequencies. For example, a cellular device that can operate in the North American 800MHz and 1900MHz cellular frequency bands, as well as the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands used in non‐North American countries. The process milestone that an Application and the related Host must pass at Aeris before a Customer can deploy commercial service to their customers using that Application and Host.

Rural Service Area. The 448 United States rural areas (markets) designated by the FCC for licenses to operate the A Band and B Band cellular services.
Received Signal Strength Indicator.
Reverse Voice Channel. The radio channel used for communication of voice or user data from a cellular device to the BS.
Service (or Signal) Control Point. A node on an SS7 network that maintains the database information necessary to deliver advanced network services.
Service Determination Request. An SDR is a specially formatted transmission from a Module that requests the Aeris systems to respond with Aeris Network Service availability information (specifically, an SDRR) on a market.
Service Determination Request Response. An SDRR is a forward page (or FDP or SMSDirect packet) from Aeris systems as a response to an SDR, and provides the requested information about the market—whether Aeris Network Services are available (and the type and length of service coverage and surrounding markets, if the Aeris Network Service capacity allows it).
Additional MSID slot within AMPS Modules that can receive cellular pages. These pages can be acted upon by the Module or sent to an attached Application processor.
Serving GPRS Support Node.
System Identification code. An identifier issued by the FCC for each market. It is also broadcast by the cellular carriers to allow cellular devices to distinguish between the home and roaming service. See also BSID.
Subscriber Identity Module. A hardware element (“smart card”) containing account information for a user on a GSM network. The SIM is inserted into a SIM holder in GSM cellular devices (the ME).
Short Message Delivery Point‐to‐Point message in SS7, used for SMS for example.
Subject Matter Expert.
Short Message Peer‐to‐Peer Protocol. An industry standard protocol for exchanging SMS packets between peers, such as an SMSC, and other entities.
Short Message Service. Short messages are a standard cellular mechanism available in digital cellular technologies to transport short packets of binary and text information on digital control channels. These packets are restricted to about 160 to 200 bytes of data, although some will be used for addressing.
Brand name of the high‐reliability, high‐performance Aeris Network Service deployed by Aeris for the transmission of SMS bytes to and from Aeris Devices.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
Simple Object Access Protocol. Used in Web Services.
Signaling Point. A node in an SS7 network that either originates or redeives signaling messages.
Signaling System 7. A wide‐area data transmission protocol and network used to communicate between telecommunication equipment for signalling.
Secure Sockets Layer. A standard for encrypted client/server communication between network devices.
Signal Transfer Point. The node in an SS7 network that is responsible for transferring (routing) signaling messages from one signaling link to another SP.
Switch Number. A number to uniquely identify a switch within a group of switches associated with a common SID. See MSCID.
The processes and connections that support the receipt of data, page requests, etc., to/from Aeris by the Host. System Interface also refers to the interface protocol for the connection from the Host to Aeris.
A physical network topology where connectivity between locations is achieved by linking several locations together in a chain using private line circuits.
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The set of protocols used to link computers across many kinds of networks. The protocol is computer and network independent and has been implemented on a wide variety of computers, oprrating systems and networks.
Terminal Control Unit.
Time Division Multiple Access. Digital cellular service method that separates multiple transmissions over a finite frequency allocation using multiple time slots for each frequency channel.

A term describing mobile wireless Applications for vehicles (such as location tracking, remote diagnostics, stolen vehicle surveillance, roadside assistance, etc.)
Telecommunications Industry Association. A Washington‐based telecommunications industry association. Members include hardware vendors, software developers, telecommunications consultants, cellular carriers, etc.
Universal Datagram Protocol. A common “fire‐and‐forget” data protocol used to transfer data and information between processes—generally across an IP network. UDP does not provide acknowledgement of delivery and is generally considered too unreliable for use in high‐reliability information transfers.
Universal Mobile Telephone Service. A 3G digital cellular service for high‐speed data and voice services. See also W‐CDMA.
Uniform Resource Locator. A character string conforming to a standard format that refers to a resource (for example, a document or image file) on the Internet by its location.
